Osage orange is a  small deciduous tree or large shrub, native to the south-central part of the United States. It typically grows about 30–50 ft tall. The distinctive fruit is roughly spherical, bumpy, 3–6 inches in diameter. The fruit becomes ripe when it turns bright yellow-green in the fall. The fruits secrete a sticky white latex substance when cut or damaged. Despite the name “Osage orange”, it is not related to any orange tree or citrus. It is a member of the mulberry family, Moraceae and as such does very well in our hot desert climate.  The fruit of the Osage tree is not usually eaten by humans or animals due to its latex texture and bland taste.
