The Texas Red Oak is a spectacular deciduous tree, similar in appearance to the Shumard oak. It is a superior choice to the Shumard oak here in the desert because it is more tolerant of drought and alkaline soils. Like its cousin, it has deeply lobed leaves that turn scarlet or maroon in the late fall. The Texas Red Oak will mature to a medium to large-sized tree, about 25-30 feet tall and wide, but can get larger with deeper soils and frequent irrigation. A beautiful shade tree and the best Red Oak for Las Vegas.
